Panucci apologises to Roma
Christian Panucci has publicly apologised to the club, his teammates and fans after refusing to come off the bench.
“I think that this is a gesture that needs to be done,” assured the defender after he was fined £80,000 for the incident, “especially for all the many fans who have supported me over the years.”
The statement was released on the official Roma website following his refusal to play the final minutes of their 0-0 draw at Reggina last Sunday.
“I apologised to the Coach, my teammates and the club. I accept full responsibility for this behaviour which put the squad in a tricky situation, but I also feel I should say sorry to all the Roma fans.”
“I am now at Fabio Capello’s disposal and after twelve years of working together I have a great deal of respect for him as a Coach and a man.”
Panucci had seemed rather less apologetic earlier today, as when confronted by a group of fans outside the training ground he told them to “mind your own business.”
Vincenzo Montella also revealed that Panucci has apologised to all his teammates in the dressing room.
However, the ex-Inter and Milan man also went on to assure his future at the Olimpico is not in jeopardy.
“I am very sorry that this incident has been used to suggest I want to leave Roma,” continued Panucci’s statement.
“This speculation is completely untrue and after three seasons at this club I don’t think my time to move on has come yet. I have a lot still to prove as a man and as a professional.”
Panucci is now practically certain to start the Rome derby, as Jonathan Zebina is suspended
