<span class="Apple-style-span">Dreading the Americanization of Romulus and Remus
对美国化罗马的担忧

When the Boston businessman Thomas DiBenedetto bought a majority stake in the Italian soccer club A.S. Roma in April, I cannot say I rejoiced.

As an American and a supporter of Roma since 1982, I do not want a Yank who may be ignorant to the ways of soccer to mess it up or to make the club too American in the name of a good investment. I do not want Roma moved in the stealth of night — its trophy case, slim as it may be, bundled up with 84 years of memories — to, say, Indianapolis, to capitalize on a potentially exciting new market.

DiBenedetto won’t move Roma to Lucas Oil Stadium, of course, but when it was reported that a redesign of the club’s logo — as sacred as it gets in soccer — was under way, you had to think that anything was possible.

Kidding aside, it is hard to ignore the fallout from recent American forays into European soccer, like fans burning an effigy of Malcolm Glazer, the owner of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who bought Manchester United.

Even for American fans who do not follow the overhyped spectacle that is England’s Premier League, it was also impossible not to notice the fiasco of the Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr. purchase of Liverpool, which, deeply in debt, they were forced to sell in 2010, after three and a half years. By contrast, Stan Kroenke, the owner of the St. Louis Rams, the Denver Avalanche and Denver Nuggets, acquired a controlling interest in Arsenal (strugglers on the field so far this season and frantic buyers at the end of last week’s transfer period), and there was nary a word of protest.

Liverpool was bought by still more Americans, though to be fair, the Fenway Sports Group, led by John Henry and Tom Werner, owners of the Boston Red Sox, appear far gentler. No wonder, since the Red Sox are a team that appreciates, honors and revels in tradition. DiBenedetto is also a partner in the Fenway group, so maybe I should just relax.

Roma’s money never felt particularly well spent, and the club has been a bit disheveled when it comes to organization. I will miss the owner Rosella Sensi, who took over from her father, beautifully decked out and chain smoking. It may not have been the 1950s, but she brought a La Dolce Vita-esque glamour to the stadium.

Bruno Conti, too, the icon of the 1980s teams who singlehandedly made me a fan of the club after his performance in the 1982 World Cup, also chain smokes on the bench in his role as an adviser.

Italian soccer in general is refreshingly unvarnished. And though there are many problems with Serie A and at Roma, there is virtue, too. Francesco Totti, the longtime captain of the Giallorossi, represents both. Totti, 34, was born in the city and has played with the club his entire career. He speaks no English, does not even try, preferring the local Roman dialect. He is known affectionately as Er Purpone, the Big Baby, gleefully sucking his thumb after scoring a goal. He is despised by fans of Rome’s other club, Lazio, which has long been associated with the political right. He is known to dive. He also has a creative genius on the field.

The team’s other symbolic player is Danielle De Rossi, known as Capitano Future. He is not the playmaker Totti is, but he is a tough, fearless and fair midfielder. He, too, is a local.

In this new Champions League era of European soccer, Roma has been on the cusp of greatness. In 2007, it won at the perennial French champions Olympique Lyon, 2-0, in the Champions League Round of 16. In the first leg of the quarterfinals, it beat Manchester United, 2-1, at Stadio Olimpico. With Luciano Spalletti’s iconoclastic 4-6-0 system, the Giallorossi were cutting edge and dazzling — until they went to Old Trafford for the return leg and the system imploded in a 7-1 loss.

If Roma has been a good team, for a time nearly a great team, it was never a super team, one of galáticos, with hefty transfer fees and wealthy but impatient foreign owners.

The new management’s first major move — the hiring of a coach — was either visionary, trendy or craven. In came Luis Enrique, 41, the coach of Barcelona’s B team, and his four assistants. Enrique played on Spain’s previously underachieving national team. Now Spain cannot lose. It even won the European under-21 title over the summer with the same Barcelona-influenced tiki-taka philosophy helped the national team win the 2008 European Championships and last summer’s World Cup.

It may well be an inspired hire, but it also feels like a corporate American one: find out who is the best and if he cannot be lured away, eyeball the masthead and poach his deputy.

The American love affair with this apparently saintly Barcelona team is obvious, if a little naïve. Barcelona was not built in a day, so give Enrique his shot (even if Roma fans are already losing their patience after being eliminated from the second-tier Europa League two weeks ago). Tradition, after all, can be confining. And Roma played some great soccer under two Swedish coaches and a Czech over the last 30 years.

DiBenedetto has said he wants a new stadium. More power to him. The vast Stadio Olimpico, which hosted the 1960 Summer Olympics, is one of the most inhospitable arenas in Europe. But getting anything done in Rome — like building a third subway line — can seem impossible. If DiBenedetto gets his stadium, he will become an immortal in the Eternal City. Stadio DiBenedetto has a nice lilt to it.
