The Curtain Comes Down
News broke last night that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would be hanging up his boots, and that has been confirmed by the player through a statement on the club's website.
Said the Norwegian: "I would like to thank the Manager, the coaching and medical staff and most of all the supporters, who have supported me through my career.
"They have been fantastic and were a real inspiration to me when I was out injured.
"The support the fans and the staff showed me during that time was the main motivation for me making my comeback.
"I feel proud to have represented Manchester United for 11 years and have some very special memories."
Solskjaer's most famous goal was probably Manchester United's winner in the 1999 Champions League final against Bayern Munich, that clinched the treble for the Red Devils.
Praise From Sir Alex
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was full of praise for the striker.
"Ending your playing career is a sad day for anyone, in the case of Ole, he has 11 fantastic years he can look back on," he said. "Ole has achieved everything a player could ever wish to achieve.
"He has been a great servant to the Club and has always remained a model professional in his responsibility as a player, in his demeanour and his manners have always been exemplary.
"Ole will hopefully go on to be a good coach."
Solskjaer's last game was May's FA Cup final - a 1-0 defeat by Chelsea on May 19th when he came on as a substitute in extra-time at Wembley.
He has already coached United's youngsters, and is looking forward to working in football after his playing career is over.
Nicknamed the 'Baby-Faced Assasin', the Norwegian international joined United from Molde for a fee of £1.5million in 1996 and soon became a popular figure at Old Trafford.
Last season Solskjaer won his seventh Premier League winners' medal, scoring 11 times in United's successful bid to reclaim the title. His hero status at Old Trafford is ensured with an outstanding record of 126 goals for United in 366 appearances.
Solskjaer was appointed a club 'ambassador' last year - a role he is expected to continue and develop - and it is thought could be given a coaching position at United.
But his retirement leaves manager Sir Alex Ferguson with only three strikers - Wayne Rooney, Louis Saha and Carlos Tevez, of whom only Tevez is currently fit.
David Gill Pays Tribute
Chief Executive David Gill also weighed in with some great words: "Ole has provided us all with some exceptional memories during his time here at the Club.
"Nobody will ever forget his dramatic winner in Barcelona, but much more than that his dedication and professionalism make him one of the great role models in football.
"Ole will be dearly missed as a player, but will go on to serve the club as an ambassador and a valuable coach."
