Eriksson wants delay to WCF squad deadline
Sven-Goran Eriksson wants FIFA to delay the deadline for the World Cup squads to be named.
The current deadline for all countries to name their final 23 for the tournament in Germany is May 15.
This date is before the Champions League final and England's warm-up games against Hungary and Jamaica.
Eriksson and other national team bosses, including Holland's Marco van Basten, are concerned because the World Cup finals do not kick off until June 9.
Managers want to delay their final selection until the start of June and plan to discuss the problem at a FIFA workshop in Dusseldorf, Germany, next month.
The England boss manager: 'The problem is that you cannot change your squad after the final date unless you have a doctor's approval that the player is really injured.
'If the date remains at May 15, we could have a situation where a player is really tired or completely out of form. We would not have the ability to change it.
'It would be very good if we could pick our squads a week before the World Cup and I don't see any reason why we cannot do that.
'I have already spoken to some of the other managers about it. Marco van Basten rang me the other day and he is very worried about that date.
'We had this discussion before the World Cup in 2002 because it was the same thing and FIFA changed it. I don't know why they pick such an early date.
'May 15 is the day we meet up with the players and then we have weeks of preparations before the start of the World Cup. We still have friendly games to play.' |
