Roma has a long history, stretching back 85 years. In that time hundreds of players have starred for the club, both Italians and foreigners. It’s too difficult to count the number of players born on Italian soil (you’d need a whole book on them alone), but it’s easier to compile the figures on overseas players – including new recruits Bradley, Leandro Castan, Dodô, Goicoechea, Marquinhos, Piris, Tachtsidis and youngsters Lucca and Svedkauskas – with the number now standing at 162.

And the numbers just keep on rising. Piris and Svedkauskas are the club’s first representatives of Paraguay and Lithuania respectively. Bradley became the Giallorossi’s first American when he signed recently. The former Chievo man will not only fill a hole in midfield –one of the best defensive midfielders in the league strengthening the engine room – but he’s also made history. He becomes Roma’s first player from across the pond. New entry USA now means that players from 41 countries have turned out for the side from the capital.

Brazil and Argentina lead the way in terms of how many Giallorossi they’ve supplied: 37 and 31 respectively. Brazil has always contributed a great deal to Roma. In the last transfer window alone 4 new Brazilians joined the club in the shape of Leandro Castan, Dodô, Marquinhos and Lucca. A look at the past sees illustrious names like Aldair, Zago, Cafu, Emerson, and those are just the players who featured in the side which won the third Scudetto. In terms of goalkeepers we’ve seen Doni (along with his brother Marangon, who never made an appearance), Julio Sergio and Artur with Spalletti and Ranieri at the helm. Going back to the 1980s we must mention Falçao and Cerezo, two world-class stars in the Viola and Liedholm era. Da Costa (1955-1960) was the first, the forward holding the record of the most derby goals in the league (9) along with Delvecchio. And what about the Argentines? A few foreign-born Italians in the ‘30s (Chini, Roma’s first foreign player, Scopelli) along with greats like Manfredini, Samuel, Batistuta, Balbo and Lamela.

After the South Americans, Sweden boasts the next largest contingent, having provided 10 players over the years. The most recent Christian "Chippen" Wilhelmsson is remembered more for his wife, stunning model Oksana Anderson, than for his ability on a football pitch. His more illustrious predecessors include Selmosson, Nordahl and Dahlin, third with his country in USA ’94.

Next on the list is France with 8: Candela (the first Frenchman to don the yellow and red) and Zebina, champions in 2001, then Dacourt, Mexes, Faty, Giuly, Menez and Nego.

Romania and Spain come next with 7 entries. Chivu (Roma’s highest fee paid for a defender, 18 million in 2004) and Del Sol (versatile midfielder ’70-’72) the most successful of those two nations. Goicoechea, Roma’s new keeper, brings the Uruguayan contingent up to 6, with Ghiggia, Schiaffino and Fonseca starring in different eras.

When you mention Germany, Rudolf Völler (87’-92’), “the Flying German”, immediately springs to mind. But there’s also Schnellinger (defender, 64’-65’, who scored the goal that made it 1-1 in Italy 4-3 Germany) and Hässler (a diminutive attacking midfielder, 91’-94’). Then come Albania (2), Austria (2), Belarus (1), Bosnia (1), Cameroon (1), Chile (1), Congo (1), Ivory Coast (2), Costa Rica (1), Denmark (3), Egypt (1), Wales (1), Ghana (2), Japan (1), Greece (4), Honduras (1), Yugoslavia (3), Lithuania (1), Mali (1), Morocco (1), Montenegro (1), Nigeria (2), Norway (2), Netherlands (1), Paraguay (1), Peru (1), Polond (1), Portugal (3), Russia (2), United States (1), Switzerland (1), Turkey (1), and Hungary (3).

The list also includes players who were registered with the club but never actually featured in a competitive match. Our study takes in any players included in the first team squad. An example of this is Costa Rican Martinez, who was signed from Brescia on deadline day in the summer of 2006 but never played for the Giallorossi due to a long injury. The same fate befell Ivorian Lassisi, a knee injury in his opening game against Boca Juniors (2001) spelling the end of his career. Gulunoglu, a German-born Turk, was a mysterious figure around Trigoria, Capello never once picked him in the 1999/2000 campaign.

Peruvian defensive midfielder Benitez had more success with the Giallorossi in the 1960s. Welshman John Charles, who formed a devastating front line with Sivori at Juve, came to Roma to finish his career in 1962/63.

Japanese international Nakata played a lot of matches for Roma and was had a key role in the match against Juventus which decided the title race in 2001. Stekelenburg is the only Dutchman to have featured for the Giallorossi, since he joined in 2011. Swiss Unal spent a season on loan at the club in 2007/08 but rarely joined up with the first team. Two Albanians have donned the Giallorossi colours in the shape of Krieziu – a league champion in 1942 – and Boshnjaku between 2004 and 2006. There are many more foreign players and dozens more stories to tell. The only continent missing on the map is Oceania: no one from Australasia has even been signed by Roma.
