Roma midfielder Radja Nainggolan has taken to social media to comment on his omission from the preliminary Belgium squad for this summer’s World Cup in Brazil.
With the initial 30-man squad announced this morning, the 26-year-old will have been disappointed to find that he was only named as a standby despite impressing since his move to Roma in January.
The player took to Twitter to make his feelings known, affirming his commitment to club over country in the process.
“Given my omission from the squad, my World Cup will be the Champions League next year with Roma,” Nainggolan wrote.
The player has made 16 appearances for Roma since his move from Cagliari, scoring two goals in the process, and would have undoubtedly expected his good form to have sealed him a place in the squad.
With fellow Belgium midfielders Marouane Fellaini and Nacer Chadli struggling for form and game time at Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur respectively, Nainggolan looked set to have a part to play.
There were no such worries for Napoli’s Dries Mertens, meanwhile, with the winger expected to play a key role in Brazil.
