Roma and Parma were fighting for places in Europe last season, but now Bruno Conti admits it has become a relegation six-pointer.
“We cannot afford a mistake at the Stadio Tardini,” said the Giallorossi boss ahead of Sunday’s game. “We are not safe yet and need a few more points to ensure we don’t get sucked back into the danger zone.”
Roma are currently just five points clear of the bottom three and have earned two points from their last nine Serie A games.
“It is very important that the team concentrates only on its own performance and progress, so that we can emerge from this situation as quickly as possible with results that will enable us to shake off this tension.”
Still without the suspended Francesco Totti, whose appeal to the Disciplinary Commission against his five-match ban was rejected, this match will also be a head to head battle between the two current Capocannonieri.
Alberto Gilardino and Vincenzo Montella are tied with 21 goals each after the Parma striker bagged four in the spectacular 6-4 win over Livorno last Sunday.
“Gilardino is young and very talented, but I hope that Vincenzo will make the difference this weekend,” added Conti.
“I cannot deny that after the 2-2 draw with Brescia I was concerned about injuries and suspensions, but Olivier Dacourt and Cristian Chivu have recovered and that is comforting news.”
The next eight days will be crucial for Roma, who face Udinese in the midweek Coppa Italia semi-finals before the Rome derby on Sunday.
“It is obvious that a good result away to Parma will put us in a better frame of mind to take on Udinese and Lazio,” explained the Coach.
It is reported we will see 18-year-old Valerio Virga make his third Serie A appearance on the left side of midfield, as Daniele De Rossi is suspended, while ex-Parma defender Matteo Ferrari is likely to push Philippe Mexes on to the bench.
