Luciano Spalletti has denied reports he tended his resignation, albeit
admitting there are tensions within the squad, but is without Antonio
Cassano for the Basel showdown.
“I would not resign if we lost the UEFA Cup tie, as I would only leave the
club as a winner,” assured the Coach after reports suggested a European
exit this week would end his brief tenure in the capital.
“Evidently the Press doesn’t know me yet. It would be a mistake for
anyone to walk out after a defeat and I have never done it. Mind you, there’
s no point denying that this game will be extremely important for everyone.
I think we can qualify and must do everything in our power to achieve that
goal.”
However, the former Udinese boss admits he hasn’t been perfect since
taking charge of the club in the summer.
“I have made mistakes. Occasionally I pushed the squad into unusual
situations, like this Sunday when Francesco Totti played as a favour when
he clearly wasn’t fit. There were other errors too, but I’ll keep them to
myself.”
The Giallorossi are in crisis after their 2-1 home defeat to Palermo and
failure to beat Basel on Wednesday will see them crash out of the UEFA Cup
at the group phase, so the squad has gone into a training camp to prepare
for this decisive encounter.
“I think this course of action was justified, as the players reacted in
the right way over the last few days. When I said in the past that this was
not a wise move, it’s because it is effectively humiliating for the squad
and Coach, but sometimes it is necessary.”
The tension is high at Roma and there were more reports of arguments
between Totti and teammate Amantino Mancini.
“There was no row,” insisted Spalletti. “It’s true that perhaps the
team needs to improve in terms of unity and friendship. Cassano has changed
his attitude and now comes to training and behaves like one of the lads,
which is why he has been allowed back into the squad.”
