Francesco Totti has launched a scathing attack on Fabio Capello and the Roma fans, warning he’ll leave the club unless they can challenge for the title.

“I am waiting for news from the club,” he told ‘Il Messaggero’ this morning. “Wages aren’t the important thing when it comes to my contract renewal. There have to be plans in place, as we cannot return to the days of a Roma side aiming for third or fourth position.”

Totti’s future has been the subject of controversy over the last couple of years, as Real Madrid, Inter and Milan are all willing to give him a real shot at trophies. The matter will come to a head over the summer, as his contract expires in 2006.

This week Coach Gigi Del Neri said Totti would remain in the Capital out of a lifestyle choice, but it seems he misjudged the mood of the city.

“The fans want me at Roma forever, but then they’re the ones who repeatedly insult me in the street,” said the Italian international. “I am only the captain when things are going well, otherwise I’m the ‘mercenary’ and ‘playboy millionaire’,”

Real Madrid seems to be the most likely destination should he choose to move on from his home town, but the door is open for another option.

“I have received offers from Italy and overseas. I would never join Juventus or Lazio, but in any case my preference would be for somewhere outside Serie A. If I ever did leave, it would not be a sudden transfer in the middle of the night,” he said with clear reference to Fabio Capello’s departure. “I would explain everything to the fans and leave Roma with my head held high.”

Capello’s decision to join rivals Juventus in a shock move this summer will probably never be forgiven by Totti, who launched another scathing attack on the Coach that took Roma to the Scudetto.

“Our summer tour around the world was Capello’s last gift before leaving,” he smirked. “It was a crazy decision, especially with so many of our players already caught up in the Olympics. I think Capello might have planned it on purpose to ruin our season.”

The two men have already engaged in a bitter public battle this season and Totti’s latest comments look set to stir up further controversy.

“Capello even had the gall to take Philippe Mexes for a ride. The day before signing for Juve he assured the defender a project was in place for this team. He can’t have reached an agreement in 24 hours. I think he already knew he was leaving Roma long before then, as first he was in talks with Inter before Juve came in. That’s Fabio Capello for you.”

Francesco Totti has reiterated that he is ready to stay at Roma – so long as they can challenge for honours.

The No 10’s capital future was again cast in doubt over the weekend after he gave a revealing interview.

But Totti insists he is hoping to continue wearing the Giallorossi shirt for some time to come.

"I simply confirmed what I had already stated in the past," the captain told ‘Rete Sport’ on Monday.

"I’ve said I am ready to stay. All that I want is to be part of a great team because this city and the fans deserve it.

"I would also like to underline that talks over a new contract (which currently expires in 2006) will have nothing to do with money."

Roma official Rosella Sensi, daughter of owner Franco, welcomed Totti’s latest comments.

"I have no doubt that he will stay here with us," she stated. "After all, what will I do without my ‘little brother?’

"Francesco is right to desire a competitive Roma but that is what we all want at this club in the future. We’ll soon start extension talks."

The Sensi family claim they will be able to keep hold of Francesco Totti and Antonio Cassano.

Much has been said on the future of Roma’s captain after he warned he would move on unless the team was competitive enough for a title chase.

“Totti has the same hopes and desires for this club as we do,” said director Rossella Sensi, the daughter of President Franco Sensi.

“We do need to adjust our spending, but that doesn’t mean we can’t handle an important contract renewal. I really can’t imagine a Roma side without our captain and Cassano in it.”

Both players are nearing the end of their current deals with the Capital club and there are strong reports of interest from Real Madrid, Juventus, Milan and Inter, but Sensi assures there will be no revolution.

“My Father sacrificed half his estate to save Roma from bankruptcy and he did it all for love. From December 27 we will have paid off our outstanding taxes and the situation has been sorted out. He will remain the President and we haven’t received any offers for the club.”

Juventus midfielder Emerson has told his former teammate Francesco Totti that he should leave AS Roma for the sake of his career.
Emerson controversially quit Roma over the summer for Juve after months of bitter negotiations and he said: "I do not have anything against my former fans - but I know that they will hiss me when I return to Roma.
"I only want them to understand that for the good of the club that changes must always occur to teams.
"In fact, for the good of everyone, including himself, I would tell Totti that he should change teams for his own sake."
