Luciano Spalletti hailed his Roma side for an historic victory at the Stadio Meazza, but ticked them off for a lack of possession.
“It was a great result, but perhaps at the moment we’re lacking something in our ability to hold the ball. We must never allow our opponents to take control of the game and set the tempo,” he said of the 2-1 win at Milan.
The Rossoneri hit the crossbar twice in the first half and seemed to have the upper hand in the second before Francesco Totti completed his brace.
“Our difficulties were caused by the pressure Milan were putting on us. Let us never forget that there are always two teams on the pitch. We had to suffer at times and the lads rolled up their sleeves to get on with it. After a few hiccups we reacted well.”
Roma’s performance really took off after Alberto Aquilani replaced a disappointing Simone Perrotta and the Under-21 international inspired the winning goal.
“Unfortunately, Perrotta was ill all night with the flu and his condition is deteriorating, as he has a temperature now. In any case, he managed the occasional spark of greatness, although obviously he wasn’t able to play to his usual standards. Totti was crucial in Milan’s best period of form, as it’s important to hold on to the ball.”
Amantino Mancini was also inconsistent on the night at San Siro, returning from a long injury lay-off.
“I think he did well,” insisted Spalletti. “He has great quality and pace that allow him to attack deep. He is lacking match-fitness a bit and needs to regain that form.”
