Luciano Spalletti asks the Roma crowd not to bay for Cristian Chivu’s blood as the Inter transfer saga continues.
Fans are furious that the Romanian defender has made it so abundantly clear he wishes to leave the Giallorossi, yet rejected moves to both Real Madrid and Barcelona because he has been offered a multi-million pound contract at Scudetto rivals Inter.
They staged a protest during a training session at the Stadio Flaminio and more is expected for next Thursday’s 80th anniversary celebrations of the club’s foundation.
“Chivu does not deserve to be jeered, as today he once again proved he is a professional,” said the Coach.
“I hope he will remain, but changes can still happen in this scenario. Our fans are very affectionate, but they also need to know how things developed.”
Talks with Inter are reported to have resumed this weekend between Roma chief Rosella Sensi and President Massimo Moratti.
“Perhaps not even Chivu knew all about the negotiations. If Cristian does leave, then we need two new players – a central defender and full-back.”
The Giallorossi are also at the centre of controversy after captain Francesco Totti chose to retire from international football so he could dedicate himself completely to Roma.
“It is a shame, but he made this decision after thinking long and hard, so it must be respected.”
