Tuesday 15 November, 2005 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Real Madrid have ruled themselves out of the race to sign Antonio Cassano, whom they are convinced will renew his contract with Roma. Speaking in an interview on Radio Incontro, club official Ernesto Bronzetti said that Real Madrid are not targeting the contract rebel as they have plenty of attacking players in their side. The transfer wizard then added that he believes the whole Cassano crisis will soon blow over. "He will sign a contract extension with Roma," said Bronzetti. "He will be reintegrated into the side and he will leave for a big outfit, perhaps a foreign club, in the summer." Whether Real’s transfer market consultant knows something we don’t remains to be seen, but Cassano staying on in the capital beyond January has so far not been considered to be the most likely outcome of this ongoing saga. Neither has his moving abroad. Even if the 23-year-old does sign a new deal, it has so far still been expected that he will move on to another Italian club – probably Juventus - in the New Year, so poor are his relations with his employers.

Francesco Totti missed Italy’s impressive 3-1 win over Holland on Saturday due to an injury, but the Roma captain will surely be on the field when the capital city side will host the Old Lady on Saturday night, something which will please Luciano Moggi.

“I’m happy about this. With Totti’s presence the match will be nicer. Let’s hope that also Cassano will play. Roma is coming back in the Scudetto circle following the problems at the start of the season.”

Roma have insisted Antonio Cassano's exclusion from their squad is due to "technical" reasons and not because of the striker's decision to turn down a contract extension.

The club issued a statement after the Italian Football Federation began an investigation into whether Cassano has been unfairly treated by the Eternal City giants.

The 23-year-old has barely featured for Luciano Spalletti's side this year after rejecting the chance to extend his current contract, which expires in June.

He has made just two appearances this campaign for the Giallorossi, and has also lost his place in Marcello Lippi's national team.

However, Roma insist there is nothing untoward about their treatment of Cassano and have released a statement on their official website, www.asromacalcio.it, explaining the club's position.

"Roma are available to clarify the situation with the Federation regarding their working relationship with Antonio Cassano," the statement reads.

"Roma respects the collective contracts and guarantees all their members the best conditions for them to carry out their profession.

"The club does not renounce their own right to make technical choices in order to favour sporting results and the exploitation of the value of their players."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 晕,说周中小卡首发RM的人还会到场考察 Roma’s Antonio Cassano could be on his way to Real Madrid in the January transfer window, according to reports in Italy.

The out-of-favour contract rebel makes his first start for the Giallorossi in two months against Strasbourg on Thursday night and Real will be watching how he performs with close interest.

Last week Real distanced themselves from any association with the 24-year-old but, since then, star striker Raul has injured himself and Cassano has entered the reckoning once more.

With his contract dispute unlikely to be resolved in the near future and formerly ‘interested’ Serie A clubs now going cold on the Bari-born forward, Roma will be willing to be rid of their enfant terrible before he leaves for nothing at the end of the season.

The Spanish giants, meanwhile, need a quality replacement for their club captain, who could be out for up to four months.

New rules also now permit players who have appeared in the UEFA Cup to play in the Champions League so, should Cassano return to his best, a deal could be imminent.

Juventus, Inter and even Fiorentina have previously been linked with the former Under-21 international.

Cassano is also looking for regular first team football in order to win a place in Marcello Lippi’s 2006 World Cup squad.
