FA look to solve Cassano case
The Italian FA have launched an investigation into the Antonio Cassano case, saying that Roma are acting ‘against the interests of the nation’.
The Cassano case has been rumbling on for weeks now with the Giallorossi refusing to play their striker, who is out of contract at the end of the season, until he signs a new deal.
Now the Italian FA and the Italian Footballers’ Association have come to Cassano’s aid, claiming that the club have been acting improperly during the saga.
"He’s a player of national interest," said Sergio Campana, President of the Players’ Association. "So I think the FA will look to solve the problem.
"When a club has to convince a player to prolong his contract by throwing him out of the first team this is against the rules of the game," he added.
Cassano is not alone in having been frozen out of the first team. Earlier this season, Udinese took the same measures to persuade Italy striker Vincenzo Iaquinta to extend his contract.
Iaquinta was dropped from the team for important games against Barcelona, Juventus and Reggina – all of which resulted in defeats for the Friulani – but the 26-year-old eventually gave in and signed new improved terms.
Roma have taken a similar hard line, but with Cassano yet to budge on the matter and the capital’s club sticking to their guns, an ugly impasse has developed. Now the FA feel it is time they got involved.
"President Franco Carraro and the FA said that cases such as this are not just a matter between the club and the player, but the entire footballing organisation," continued Campana. "So the FA will look into the matter and examine it thoroughly.
"I haven’t got involved because to do so one needs to know every last detail of the relationship between the player and the club.
"But President Carraro has invited the League and the Professional Footballers’ Association to study the rules pertaining to cases such as this."
Campana gave the example of Bayern Munich who are at risk at losing a large number of their first team players, whose contracts expire at the end of the season.
"Bayern Munich have nine players whose contracts are running out, including their captain Michael Ballack." he added. "But they play without any problems. Only in Italy do we have these complications."
Carraro, for his part, confirmed that the FA would be looking into the dispute with an open mind.
"It is not normal for a club to tell a player whose contract is up in three months that he cannot play," said Carraro. "But it is also not right that a player who scores a hat-trick should suddenly ask for a pay rise.
"We intervened in the Iaquinta case and we will do the same with Cassano. Football must realise that contracts must be respected by both parties."
Cassano will be hoping the case is resolved quickly as the longer he holds out and doesn’t play, the slimmer his chances are of playing in the World Cup in Germany this summer.
