Totti relies on TV evidence
Francesco Totti’s appeal against a five-match ban rests on video evidence showing his clashes with Francesco Colonnese were not as serious as first thought.
The Roma captain was given the suspension following his red card in the 2-0 defeat to Siena, as the linesman wrote in his report that he had witnessed several off the ball incidents between the two players.
He was sent off for punching the defender, but it is claimed that he had also kicked Colonnese in a separate clash.
However, Roma’s lawyers maintain that video evidence proves he did not make contact with the Siena player in that other spat and that Colonnese fell dramatically to the ground in order to attract the officials’ attention.
The Giallorossi representatives are also hoping to break with tradition in the use of video evidence to show the entire match to the Disciplinary Commission so that they can see the “constant provocation” that led to Totti’s outrageous punch.
There are also suggestions that Colonnese planned to provoke the player, as there is a long history between them that stretches back to another red card incident in December 1997, when the defender was playing for Inter.
The most Roma can hope for is to cut the ban to three matches, as one is set for the red card and another two for the punch, but the two-game suspension added on for the kick could be wiped out on appeal. That at least would enable Totti to play in the Rome derby on May 15.
Meanwhile, the troubled team has been locked inside the Trigoria training ground until Sunday’s trip to Sampdoria in order to better prepare for the encounter. Roma have picked up just one point from their last seven Serie A games.（channel4)
