Sulley Muntari's agent has warned Portsmouth that they face competition in their bid to land his client.

The powerful midfielder remains one of Pompey boss Harry Redknapp's long-term targets, with the South Coast club having repeatedly failed in their efforts to land him in January.

It has previously been intimated that a deal to bring Muntari to England could nevertheless be concluded in the summer.

However, with agent Stefano Antonelli having confirmed that Roma may enter the race for Muntari's signature, it would appear Portsmouth still have it all to do to secure a player they have coveted for a considerable time.

"It is not so sure that he will go to play in England, as it seemed in January," Antonelli told magazine Guerin Sportivo.

"Muntari asked me if there were possibilities for a transfer to Roma, where he would return to coach Luciano Spalletti, who has a big faith in him."

Sulley Ali Muntari has issued a statement denying he told newspapers that he was eager to join Roma in the summer.

The Udinese midfielder was quoted in the Press this week proclaiming his intention to make a move to the Stadio Olimpico, sparking transfer speculation.

“I did not give any interviews,” insisted the Ghanaian. “I do not understand where these stories come from.”

Muntari has also been linked with Manchester United, but assured he was not making a public appeal for a move away from Udinese.

“You know full well that I do not generally stop to talk with journalists, especially at the moment when the team is under a Press silence.”

The 2006 World Cup star is expected to start against Lazio in the Sunday evening game at the Stadio Friuli.
