Boro fans stabbed in Rome

Police have confirmed that three Middlesbrough fans were stabbed in Rome last night, although their injuries are not life-threatening.
The incident occurred at around 11pm local time after a group of Italians ambushed two bars full of Boro fans ahead of tonight’s UEFA Cup clash against the Giallorossi.
“Some Boro fans were drinking in a bar and were attacked by some Roma fans,” revealed Middlesbrough chief executive Keith Lamb.
“A number of Boro fans have been injured and a small number were taken to hospital for medical treatment.”
It’s understood that 15 supporters were hurt in total after over 150 Boro followers congregated in the centre of the capital.
One supporter was forced to have a minor operation and currently remains in hospital for observation purposes.
Italian police were quickly on the scene after reports that a flare was thrown into one of the bars where the fans were drinking.
That led to some angry exchanges as tables, chairs, glasses and bottles were thrown until the authorities got a grip of the situation.
Unconfirmed reports suggest that the group of Italian thugs, thought to be a section of Roma’s Ultras, were conducted by a man with an axe.
This is the second stabbing incident in the space of a few months to hit the Premiership outfit after Brendan O’Connor, 36, was attacked in the Dutch capital after travelling to see the UEFA Cup clash against AZ Alkmaar.
The two sides meet each other at the Stadio Olimpico this evening after Boro won the first leg 1-0 last week
