Novellino respects Roma

Walter Novellino is not fooled by Roma’s poor performances this season and insists they are among the best sides in Italy.


“This will be a very difficult game against one of the greatest outfits in Serie A,” said the Sampdoria Coach ahead of Sunday’s evening fixture.


“The Giallorossi may have had a tricky start to the campaign, but they appear to be on the road to recovery.”


Gigi Del Neri’s new 3-4-3 system worked wonders with a 4-0 demolition of Siena last week, but they have injury worries with Antonio Cassano battling to recover from a bruised ankle.


Despite this praise, the Sampdoria tactician is also looking to Udinese’s recent 3-0 victory at the Stadio Olimpico for inspiration.


“We are going to the Capital with respect for our opponents,” concluded Novellino, “but also aware that we have a few aces up our sleeves. Our defence has been very solid so far this season and that will be able to challenge Roma’s fantastic strike force.”


There are changes in midfield due to the one-match ban for Cristiano Doni, while former Roma Francesco Antonioli starts in goal.

Roma v Sampdoria: Preview

Roma and Sampdoria will both go into their meeting with a big weight lifted from their shoulders.

The Giallorossi have enjoyed a week-long reprieve from their season of torment after smashing four goals past Siena last weekend to cruise to their fourth victory of the campaign.

In Genoa, meanwhile, Samp ended their goal drought by scoring for the first time in 508 minutes in their 1-0 triumph against Parma.

"The goal that was lacking was a big weight on everyone," admitted Samp coach Walter Novellino, whose team have netted only nine goals in 13 games.

"Finally it has arrived and now we can look ahead with optimism."

This fixture looks set to be an even match-up, with the Blucerchiati having heavily relied on their strength in defence to maintain their ninth position in the standings.

The capital city club, however, have instead looked to their attacking line to solve their critical problems at the back - a gamble that has seen them concede 21 goals but score 23.

"Roma are coming from a bad spell but in the last game they showed what they are capable of," said Samp midfielder Max Tonetto.

"Maybe it was better that they had postponed their comeback to form but I guess with the quality of players they have it was just inevitable."

However, Roma still have a lot of work to do if they want to secure a place in Europe next season - with the Scudetto already looking out of reach with leaders Juventus 16 points clear of the Giallorossi.

But if coach Luigi Del Neri is hoping for a helping hand from his former club, he may have to seek it elsewhere.

"We are travelling to the Olimpico hoping to get a positive result," said Tonetto, whose team have won three of their six away games.

"There is no reason why we cannot be optimistic."

Roma may have lost just one league game at home this season but there have been plenty of other forgettable moments at the Stadio Olimpico - from Antonio Cassano's sending-off for hitting an opponent in the face to the Champions League fiasco with referee Anders Frisk being hit by an flying object and the recent 3-0 humiliation by Udinese.

Cassano, who played his best game of the season at the weekend, is unlikely to face Sampdoria having picked up a thigh injury during training.

Del Neri will also have to do without midfielder Daniele De Rossi who serves a one-match ban - but is hoping to recall defenders Simone Perrotta and Christian Panucci.

Samp travel to Rome without suspended midfielder Cristiano Doni.
