Roma have offered an official apology to injured referee Anders Frisk, and pleaded for leniency after their UEFA Champions League clash with Dynamo Kiev was called off at half time.
Referee Frisk was left bloodied after being hit by an object thrown from the Roma crowd as he walked off the pitch at half time.
The Swedish official decided that the match would have to be abandoned, with Kiev leading 1-0, because he could not guarantee the safety of the other match officials.
Roma have been swift to apologise for the incident, but point out that the actions of a tiny minority can not be prevented, despite a heavy police presence.
"I want to officially apologise to the referee," said club director Franco Baldini at a press conference.
"Frisk was seen by our doctors then taken to his hotel and we checked his recovery.
"Roma want to underline that they brought 400 policeman in for the match.
"That is 400 reasons why we thought we would play in a good match.
"It would be an enormous satisfaction to find out just which person risked all the efforts we have made.
"This is not the image Roma want, but this incident could have fallen on anyone who made big sacrifices.
"I ask that the Italian football institutions help us and help themselves in defending us from these incidents.
"Whoever did this was not a supporter and I hope that Roma are not the only ones to pay.
"We could lose out on around |
