Uefa Cup Preview: Gaziantepspor-Roma
02/25/2004. BACKGROUND:
AS Roma will be looking to advance in the UEFA Cup competition, whilst juggling more important Serie A commitments in the process, which will certainly be no easy feat.
Roma are on a high after annihilating Siena 6-0 on the weekend, with young prodigy Antonio Cassano hitting the headlines for all the right reasons after a stunning hat-trick. They will certainly be looking for much of the same in this fixture, with the away goals rule a big factor in determining the eventual winners of these ties.
Last weeks win was a welcome relief to a Roma side that has struggled to maintain any sort of consistency since the Christmas break. A loss to Brescia and draws against both Udinese and Ancona, combined with the 4-0 crushing of Juventus and 6-0 thrashing of Siena would have certainly given Capello many heart attacks.
Roma will be almost definitely be playing a second string side, which should see Francesco Totti, hat trick hero Cassano, Emerson, Walter Samuel, Ivan Pelizzoli and Cristian Chivu watch from the sidelines. Expect Zotti in goal and a frontline consisting of Delvecchio and Carew, whilst highly rated Azzurini International Gaetano D'Agostino should start on the left. De Rossi will surely get another chance in centre of the park along with Damiano Tommasi, who has been frozen out recently due to the brilliant form of Frenchman Oliver Dacourt. Vincenzo Montella may recover in time to be fit for this match, but expect him to be saved for this weeks Serie A fixture against Parma.
It is not known what to expect from Gaziantepspor, who are not having the best of seasons. Currently sitting 9th in the Turkish Superliga, they certainly don't look like causing many problems for the Italians, however it is important to know that they did knock RC Lens out of this competition late last year. They will certainly not be a pushover, and will make Roma work hard if they are to advance.
PROBABLE LINE-UPS
Roma (4-4-2): Zotti; Panucci, Zebina, Dellas, Candela; Lima, Tommasi, De Rossi, D'Agostino; Delvecchio, Carew;
Gaziantepspor (To be announced)
