Rudi Voeller admits he is in negotiations to take over the Roma bench from Cesare Prandelli after his shock resignation.
“I need time,” the German told ‘Il Messaggero’ newspaper, “and am very sorry for what Prandelli is going through. I would never have wanted to be called to Roma in these circumstances.”
Voeller would be a smart choice for the club, as he was a fan favourite for many years during his playing career in the Capital.
He also has international pedigree following his spell as manager of Germany, picking up an unexpected runners-up medal in the 2002 World Cup before their early Euro 2004 exit.
“Besides,” added Voeller following his walk-out from the national side, “I still haven’t decided whether I want to continue in football management.”
The ex-player has shot ahead of his rivals for this post. Gigi Del Neri’s rigid 4-4-2 system would not suit the stars at his disposal – above all Francesco Totti – while it seems that former Perugia boss Serse Cosmi is not considered experienced enough to dive straight into the Champions’ League.
Voeller’s main advantage is that he already has a deep love of Roma and is not particularly career-oriented. In fact, he only took over the German job as a stopgap solution and was convinced to stay on by players and peers.
This would suit the Giallorossi, as they could offer him a one-year contract with an option to carry on as a club director should Prandelli decide to return next season.
This remains a possibility, as the former Parma tactician has only backed out due to personal worries linked to his wife’s recent health problems.
“Cesare has given me the greatest proof of love that a husband can provide for his wife,” stated 42-year-old Manuela in the ‘Corriere della Sera’. “He has decided to stay close to me in this difficult time and I can only thank him for this wonderful gesture.”
Meanwhile, Roma open their official season with a friendly game against the Iran national squad tomorrow evening, complete with a presentation of the entire squad to the Stadio Olimpico fans.
The men on the bench will be Ezio Sella and Prandelli’s assistant manager Gabriele Pin.
