Totti denies Olympics snub Saturday 10 July, 2004

Francesco Totti insists he was willing to join the Italian Olympics squad, while Roma stress there is no deal to sell Emerson to Juventus.
The Giallorossi captain had been named as a potential over-age player to be part of Claudio Gentile’s Olympics bid with the Under-21 squad.
When Totti and his teammate Antonio Cassano were not included, Gentile explained that they were “unavailable for selection.”
However, Totti reacted angrily to the suggestion he had purposefully snubbed this expedition to Athens.
“I was at Gentile’s disposal for a potential Olympics call,” read a press statement, “and placed the decision purely in the hands of the Federation.”
Azzurrini Coach Gentile has instead brought along recent Under-21 graduates Andrea Pirlo, Matteo Ferrari, Ivan Pelizzoli, Cesare Natali and Simone Barone, who will be whittled down to three for the 22-man squad.
Roma also released a statement to deny reports that Emerson had essentially been handed over to Juventus. Their own director of sport Franco Baldini told a radio station that they had “no other choice” but to sell him to the Bianconeri.
“With regards to comments made by Baldini on a local radio station,” read the note, “AS Roma wish to point out that, although they are aware of Emerson’s desire to leave this club and his preference for FC Juventus, at the moment there has been no agreement to complete a transfer.”
Nonetheless, Emerson’s switch to Turin can be only days away now that Roma have finally given up trying to place him elsewhere. The Brazilian has already rejected £12m offers from Real Madrid and Inter.
