Roma hooligans force new ban Tuesday 4 May, 2004
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The incidents during Roma’s 1-0 defeat at Milan last Sunday have prompted a new one-match ban on playing at the Stadio Olimpico.
Play was halted three times at the San Siro as objects and flares thrown from the stands by away supporters struck Gennaro Gattuso and Dida.
As the Giallorossi have only recently ended a two-match ban on playing in their home stadium due to crowd trouble during the Rome derby, the Disciplinary Commission did not hesitate in implementing this new punishment.
The cash-strapped club has also been fined £27,000 for these latest violent incidents by sections of its fanbase.
The report revealed that the ban would have been increased had it not been for “the positive actions of the Coach during the first halt of play and the fact Roma were unable to perform their usual checks as it was an away game.”
Fabio Capello walked towards the Roma end and made clear gestures asking his fans to calm down and act “in a more responsible manner.”
The ban is with immediate effect, so the only remaining home game in the Giallorossi calendar – this coming Sunday’s match with Perugia – will be played on neutral turf.
The venue has not yet been confirmed, but the last two games outside the Olimpico were played at Palermo’s Stadio Renzo Barbera.
The Disciplinary Commission has also suspended 13 Serie A players for the Week 33 encounters:
