| Roma face a tricky trip to Palermo, but Luciano Spalletti insists they must win all five remaining games to earn a Champions League spot.
“We’ll have to give our very best if we are to finish fourth,” warned the Coach. “There is only one way to ensure that aim, and that is to win all our matches.”
Last week the Giallorossi leapfrogged past Fiorentina into that final European berth, but with only one point separating them and a difficult encounter in Sicily, the situation could change again.
“A great team knows how to deal with even the most difficult environments. We will go to the Stadio Barbera with the intention of scoring goals and taking home an important result. We have to do what we always have done.”
This is a particularly intriguing tie because Roma eliminated Palermo from the Coppa Italia on Wednesday with a controversial 1-0 victory. In response, Rosanero President Maurizio Zamparini pledged to make it ‘hell on earth’ for the visiting team.
“I saw a great game played by both sides. I can understand that Palermo were disappointed at going out, but I don’t see what all this tension is about. I’ll have no problem in shaking Zamparini’s hand. After all, he did fire me twice when I was at Venezia in 1999-2000.”
There is revenge of another kind for the Capital club, as Palermo won 2-1 at the Olimpico when they met earlier this season in Serie A.
“Our motivation is locked up in the race for a spot in the Champions League. The rest counts for nothing. Alberto Aquilani, Philippe Mexes and Simone Perrotta are all fit and ready to go. We’re also confident Cristian Chivu can recover in time.”
