Mancini loses Stam for Capital clash Tuesday 20 April, 2004
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jaap Stam will not take part in Wednesday’s rescheduled Rome derby and Lazio Coach Roberto Mancini admits his men are the underdogs.
“Roma are going into this game in a much better condition than us,” noted the tactician who has never won a Derby della Capitale.
“But in the last few games I can assure you that our quality of play has not been inferior to the Giallorossi. In fact, we sometimes impressed even more than our neighbours.”
Fabio Capello’s side is still in the running for the Scudetto, but needed a Francesco Totti free kick to beat relegation strugglers Modena on Sunday evening.
Both sides had gone close to scoring during the original meeting postponed just after half-time on March 21.
“We must play with the same approach as the first derby,” explained Mancini. “I have to change something, as we are missing Cesar and Stam.”
Guerino Gottardi, Stam and influential Brazilian winger Cesar are not part of the squad for the late afternoon kick-off, so Mancio is expected to shelve his 4-3-3 system.
“Cesar’s absence is a real blow for us,” continued the former Lazio player. “When Dejan Stankovic was still here we’d use him in that role, but now we could move Claudio Lopez out wide.”
It’s likely that he will return to the more solid 4-4-2 system with Claudio Lopez or Roberto Muzzi alongside Bernardo Corradi.
Lazio squad: Albertini, Casazza, Claudio Lopez, Colonnese, Corradi, Dabo, Favalli, Fernando Couto, Fiore, Giannichedda, Inzaghi, Liverani, Mihajlovic, Muzzi, Negro, Oddo, Peruzzi, Sereni, Zauri
