Going into Wednesday's game against in-form Chievo, Spalletti will still expect the fans to be behind him and his players before the Christmas break as three points will move them into the top half of the table. But Chievo should provide stern opposition as they have been one of the surprise packages in Serie A this season, having only lost against Juventus and Messina so far this term. Their 2-0 triumph against Udinese on Sunday allowed the men from Verona to maintain sixth position in the league, two points clear of Sampdoria and six clear of Wednesday's opponents Roma. Chievo coach Beppe Pillon could not have asked for a better coaching debut in the top flight but admits the success is down to his players. "I have a fantastic team that gives everything when they go on the pitch," said Pillon. "We are working well, we face no pressure and we are taking positive results." Pillon expects his players to keep their feet firmly on the ground as their aim is still to avoid relegation. "Our intention is to clinch 40 points which should be enough to secure our Serie A status," he said. Spalletti has not had the same fortune as that of Pillon, with his under-achieving players having failed to make much of an impact this season. Having only clinched three victories in eight home games, the Stadio Olimpico has failed to provide the Eternal City giants with the same inspiration that has seen their neighbours Lazio remain unbeaten at home. Luck has not been on Roma's side with injuries having hindered them in recent weeks. And they continue to be without six first-team regulars, including attacking trio Antonio Cassano, Vincenzo Montella and Shabani Nonda, for Wednesday's game. Sunday's 1-1 draw at Sampdoria tasted like a victory to Spalletti due to the depleted nature of the squad. "The players have understood the difficult situation we are in regarding the players that are out of action through injury," he said. "I am satisfied with the draw but more so with the team's behaviour for they have played a great game."
