Tromsø IL coach Steinar Nilsen insists his side will push Italian giants AS Roma all the way when they welcome the Giallorossi to Norway for their UEFA Cup Group E opener on Thursday.
Previous form
Nilsen's side are hovering just three points above the Norwegian Tippeligaen's relegation zone with two games remaining, but Nilsen said: "The interest before this game is huge and we hope to give Roma a run for their money. Tromsø have beaten big sides at home before and we will do all we can to take the points."
Christensen doubt
Nilsen has been boosted by the news that Lars Iver Strand, who missed the weekend's crucial domestic 1-0 victory against SFK Lyn Oslo, could be back in contention after recovering from a knee injury. Midfield colleague Roar Christensen is a doubt after picking up a similar problem in training, but striker Ole Martin Årst has been passed fit.
Totti out
All is not well in the Roma camp, however. Ravaged by injuries to striker Antonio Cassano, midfielder Alberto Aquilani, defender Luigi Sartor and goalkeeper Dimitrios Eleftheropoulos, Giallorossi coach Luciano Spalletti will also be without Francesco Totti for the trip to Norway. The talismanic Italian international will stay in Rome as his wife prepares to give birth.
'Blame me'
Good news for Spalletti came in the form of a fit-again Christian Chivu, who has shaken off an achilles tendon injury sufficiently to travel along with Shabani Nonda after a muscle strain. But two wins from seven Serie A games is not encouraging form ahead of next weekend's derby with S.S. Lazio and although Spalletti asked the club's increasingly unhappy fans to "blame me and not the players," there seems little doubt that defeat in their UEFA Cup group stage opener would be received poorly in Rome.
