Roma thought Ascoli had earned a point in the capital after Cristian Chivu's red card, but substitute Philippe Mexes popped up for the stoppage-time winner.
The Giallorossi were a team in crisis last week, but their astonishing 3-2 midweek win away to Inter gave back the confidence that was so sorely lacking. Francesco Totti was sent off in that game and therefore suspended, while Antonio Cassano was not recalled despite recovering from an ankle injury. Ascoli have been impressive this season and hoped to build on recent results, even if Mirko Cudini, Corrado Colombo and Valerio Virga were sidelined.
Roma thought they had taken the lead after five minutes with a splendid Simone Perrotta counter-attack when he combined with Rodrigo Taddei. However, his first shot was charged down by the goalkeeper and the second attempt cleared off the line by Vittorio Tosto.
At the other end, Fabio Quagliarella's half-volley was smothered by Doni in the Giallorossi goal.
Taddei almost scored a spectacular strike, as his corner kick clipped the top of the crossbar with the goalkeeper beaten. Carbone's desperate defensive intervention toe-poked the ball off Taddei's foot as the Brazilian prepared to pull the trigger after galloping into the area.
Perrotta was on fine form during the first half and his powerful strike tested goalkeeper Coppola, but Amantino Mancini was unable to turn in the loose ball.
Ascoli had penalty appeals waved away for a Samuel Kuffour handling offence to anticipate Quagliarella in the area, while Vincenzo Montella struck the side-netting.
Christian Panucci extended his contract until 2009 this week and he opened the scoring with his third goal of the campaign. The defender had to lean down to get his header on to a Cristian Chivu free kick and in off the underside of the crossbar.
Roma thought they had doubled their lead when Taddei flicked the ball back from the by-line and Montella tapped in from six yards, but the goal was disallowed as the assistant referee judged the ball to have already gone out of play.
Ascoli lost captain Cristiano with what appears to be a serious muscular injury and he was stretchered off.
The home side put together a wonderful move on 55 minutes, as Montella hooked down a Taddei cross and cut back for Mancini, but his angled drive slammed the base of the upright.
Ascoli also had a good opportunity to equalise soon after, but Quagliarella sprung the offside trap only to fire straight at Doni as the goalkeeper rushed off his line to narrow the angle.
Moments later, Parola's fierce drive from the edge of the box skimmed the upright. Ascoli were getting closer and Doni misjudged a corner kick, but Domizzi's header only clipped the outside of the upright.
Perrotta wasted a golden opportunity for Roma, ballooning Mancini's assist well over the bar.
The Stadio Olimpico gave a standing ovation to substitute Damiano Tommasi, who made his comeback after more than a year out of action. The midfielder suffered an horrific knee injury during a summer friendly with Stoke City in July 2004 and has signed a new contract on minimum wage in order to stay with the Giallorossi. Soon after, Montella was substituted and Tommasi handed the captain's armband.
However, Roma ended the game in 10 men, as Chivu was shown a straight red card for an elbow on Sasa Bjelanovic.
It proved a decisive moment, as moments later Ascoli equalised at the Stadio Olimpico. Domizzi rifled a magnificent free kick into the top far corner of the net.
However, Roma restored their lead in stoppages with substitute Philippe Mexes. The defender, who came on to replace the red-carded Chivu, was left totally unmarked to nod in after Kuffour had held up a free kick from the right.
