Fri April 23, 2004 4:20 AM MILAN (Reuters) - Italian soccer club AS Roma said on Thursday it would need to sell players to meet payments due in the next couple of months, including a deposit to play in next season's championship.
Roma's shareholders met on Thursday to approve a 150 million euro capital increase and said it was meeting back payments of players salaries and taxes. The capital hike, which can be paid for in cash or swapping debt for equity, will run until July 31.
The club and its owners have struck a series of deals to restructure its finances and keep it on the pitch, but Roma said it was still 15 million euros short of the 93 million it will need to pay by June 30 in bills and deposits.
"That shortfall could be covered by income from trading players in the summer transfer season," Roma said.
Roma's most valuable assets are its players. Chief among them is captain Francesco Totti, who has recently said he might leave the club, creating a media frenzy over how many millions the soccer star could fetch.
At the end of February, the club's net debt stood at 241 million euros and is still paying off some player salaries from last year. Roma said it had met last September's payments in March and was now paying off October, December and January.
