CHANNEL4----| Real join Chivu race | Monday 25 June, 2007 |
Reports in Spain claim that Real Madrid are ready to enter the bidding war to sign Roma defender Cristian Chivu.
The Romanian player has been heavily linked with Inter, but the Giallorossi are now close to finalising a deal with Barcelona, who have allegedly offered £10m for the former Ajax youngster.
Spanish newspaper Marca reports that Real Madrid are also interested in Chivu, who has already spoken to Coach Fabio Capello stating that he would be glad to join the Merengues.
The former Roma boss, who requested the defender’s arrival at the Stadio Olimpico from Ajax in 2003, has reportedly expressed his desire to work with the player once again in Madrid.
Real have not made an official approach for the time being and their next move will most certainly depend on Capello’s future on the Spanish giants’ bench.
President Ramon Calderon declared this morning that there will be no changes at present and the Coach’s future will not be announced for another two to three weeks.
However, Spanish newspaper AS claims that the Pieris-born tactician’s contract will be rescinded by Los Blancos in the next few days, despite Capello leading them to the Liga title in his first season.
In the meantime, Chivu was spotted in Milan on Sunday with his agent Giovanni Becali, as the Nerazzurri are seemingly trying to beat Barcelona in the race to secure the Romanian’s services.
Inter are ready to offer £8m for the defender and technical director Marco Branca is confident that a deal can be struck in the next 24 hours.
