Vincenzo Montella could be set for a surprise return to Sampdoria, the club where he was Capocannoniere in 1996-97.
L’Aeroplanino is still owned by Roma after his disappointing six-month loan spell at Fulham and must find a new club or risk spending another season on the sidelines.
He has been with the Giallorossi since 1999 and helped to win the Scudetto there, but has struggled to fit into Luciano Spalletti’s tactical system.
The return to Sampdoria would be an intriguing one, as he was a fan favourite and Serie A Capocannoniere here with 22 goals in 1996-97.
The Blucerchiati have seen their front line completely revolutionised after the departure of Fabio Quagliarella, Fabio Bazzani and Francesco Flachi.
Andrea Caracciolo has been snapped up from Palermo and usually works best with a quick support striker by his side.
The other option for new Sampdoria boss Walter Mazzarri is Giuseppe Rossi, who spent the latter half of the campaign on loan at Parma.
It is rumoured that Samp have intercepted the negotiations between Manchester United and Parma, hoping to poach the talented Under-21 international.
