Fabio Capello made several changes with injuries to Vincent Candela, Christian Panucci and Vincenzo Montella. He changed to a 4-4-2 system with Francisco Lima as a fullback, while Under-21 international Gaetano D'Agostino took the Trequartista role behind Francesco Totti and Antonio Cassano.
The Giallorossi dominated possession in the early stages, but were unable to cause the home defence any real problems. Their best chances came from set-pieces with Walter Samuel's effort well saved.
Francesco Totti had a few long-range attempts, while there was a worry for Antonio Cassano when he suffered a cut forehead.
The deadlock was eventually broken at the dawn of the second half, when Emerson rose to nod in a Gaetano D'Agostino corner kick.
There was a different air about the Giallorossi in this second half and it is likely Fabio Capello shook the dressing room walls with his motivating team talk.
Roma doubled their lead moments later with a big hand from the Lecce defence, as D'Agostino's free kick was turned into his own net by Cesare Bovo.
Lecce fought back only for Ivan Pelizzoli to parry a powerful Marco Cassetti angled drive.
In stoppage time Cassano was pushed over in the box and the referee pointed to the spot. Francesco Totti stepped up and converted to make the final result 3-0.
