Emmanuel Adebayor
An exciting young talent, Emmanuel 'Shedi' Adebayor burst on to the French scene with FC Metz in 2002/03, prompting AS Monaco FC to pay €3.2m for the giant striker.
National team
After making his debut for Togo at the age of 18, Adebayor was selected by his country for the 2002 African Cup of Nations, but it was not a great success for the teenager as he was forced to play out of position and Togo were eliminated in the group stages.
Club
Born in February 1984, Metz spotted Adebayor playing for Togo in a youth tournament in Sweden when he was just 15. He made his Ligue 1 debut for Metz in 2001/02 and immediately impressed, going on to appear ten times that season and score two goals, although the club were relegated to the second division. Adebayor excelled in his first campaign as a regular player, scoring 13 goals in 34 games and taking a major role in Metz's promotion back to the top flight. His surging runs and clinical finishing attracted the attentions of Southampton FC and VfB Stuttgart, but he chose to stay in France and signed a five-year contract with Monaco in the summer of 2003.
2003/04: Marked his first season in Monaco colours by scoring eight times in 31 Ligue 1 games. Was involved in all of the club’s 13 UEFA Champions League games, too, but did not get off the bench for either the semi-final or the showpiece in Gelsenkirchen.
