Rudi Voller reveals he is planning to revive the Roma career of Vincent Candela, who will be a crucial figure in the new tactical set-up.
“Candela did very well in our first friendly encounter,” the Coach said after a 3-1 victory against Lodigiani this weekend. “I really hope that he can recapture the kind of form that helped Roma to win the Scudetto.”
The Frenchman was a decisive element in the title-winning team of 2000-01, but has since struggled with a succession if injuries and poor form.
Able to play as either a fullback or on the left side of midfield, Candela will be important in giving the new-look Roma more width.
“For the moment we will continue to work on the 4-4-2 system,” continued Voller, “and the season is rushing towards us. I am confident that a side can improve a great deal over the space of a week if we work with real intensity.”
The German was drafted in to replace Cesare Prandelli, who resigned due to personal problems, only last week and has precious little time to change the team’s tactics.
“Roma have been through a torrid time,” he concluded, “and even winning a friendly game against a Serie C side is important if it shows the players have character. I saw character in this performance.”
The Giallorossi have sold several star players, including Emerson and Jonathan Zebina, but they have an impressive crop of youngsters breaking into the squad.
Daniele De Rossi and Matteo Ferrari have been promoted from the Under-21 side to the senior Italy team, while the new batch of Azzurrini have a strong Roma influence.
“I hope that Voller is watching us,” noted Alberto Aquilani after his goal in the 2-0 win over Norway, “because I think I’ve put in a good pre-season. Unfortunately, he arrived just as I was leaving to work with Claudio Gentile’s Azzurrini. I admit the competition for midfield places at Roma is fierce and I’m bottom of the pile, but I’m willing to fight for my chance.”
