Francesco Totti has been advised not to postpone surgery on his fractured ankle, which will mean ruining his pre-season plans. The Roma captain had a metal plaque inserted to stabilise the top of the foot he fractured back in February 2006. He has made a full recovery and is the current Serie A Capocannoniere, not to mention just two goals away from the Golden Shoe award for top European scorer. There were reports he could postpone surgery for months or even a year considering his form, but the medic who performed the operation warns that is not a good option. “There is no urgent medical requirement to remove the plaque and it will not compromise his performances on the field,” noted Professor Mariani. “But the metal should be taken off the bone, because in the long term it could modify the bone and fibres adjacent to it.” If Totti does decide to go under the knife, it will mean a month of complete rest, including two weeks without letting his foot touch water. “This would drastically reduce or even forego his summer holiday time,” added the surgeon.

Francesco Totti has decided not to remove the metal plaque from his ankle despite the advice of his doctor.

The Roma captain fractured his left ankle during a match with Empoli in February 2006 and made a remarkable recovery to be fit for the World Cup.


During the original operation, a metal plaque was attached to the bone to stabilise the injury and was meant to be removed after a few months.


The medic who performed the surgery, Professor Mariani, had advised Totti to take the plaque out this summer to avoid potential problems later on in life.


However, as this would involve two months without training and affect his summer break, today the Giallorossi star decided he will carry on in his current condition.


Despite the serious injury, Totti has finished this season as Serie A Capocannoniere with 26 goals and could also win the European Golden Shoe.
