Walter Samuel, Jonathan Zebina and Francisco Lima have all left Roma, forcing Fabio Capello to confront his own fears about the club.
“Samuel was one of the central pillars of the team,” the Coach told Roma Channel, “and we were basing the future of the side around him.”
“A team can chop and change, but the basic skeleton of the side needs to remain solid and consistent. Like every tree, there are the branches and Samuel was part of the trunk.”
The Argentine has completed his £18m switch to Real Madrid and Emerson is set to follow with interest from Juventus, Barcelona and Chelsea.
With Zebina joining the Bianconeri and Lima also making his departure on a free transfer official, there are precious few options left.
“Now we will have to evaluate the future of this side,” continued a concerned Capello. “Someone needs to be brought in and there are very few good defenders on the market.”
It is reported that the Giallorossi are using the Samuel cash to try and tempt Parma’s Matteo Ferrari towards the Capital, but they face tough competition from Juventus.
