Sheva completes Chelsea move
Andriy Shevchenko is officially a Chelsea player after completing his £30m move from Milan this evening.
The 29-year-old Ukrainian was given permission to fly in to London today and go over the final details of his four-year contract after undergoing a medical and tonight Milan announced the sale on their website.
The club thanked “Andriy Shevchenko, an extraordinary man and striker, for the many emotions he has given us during his seven years with the Rossoneri jersey.”
This sale could be a new British record, beating the £30m Manchester United paid for Leeds defender Rio Ferdinand in 2002, but no financial details have been confirmed.
"I am here for the challenge and the excitement of the Premier League," said the Ukraine captain on the official Chelsea website.
"I am going from one big club to another and joining a team of champions. There is a right moment to join a football club and I think I have arrived here at the perfect time."
Sheva first joined the Rossoneri in July 1999 and won the Ballon d’Or, Champions League, Scudetto, Coppa Italia, Italian Super Cup and European Super Cup with the club.
"The Champions League has to be a realistic target for next season but it is not just about the Champions League. Chelsea is going for their third Premiership as well and I like the club's mentality of wanting to win every game they play."
The hitman also praised his new Coach, Jose Mourinho.
"I have followed Mr Mourinho's career carefully for the last few years and have been hugely impressed with the way he manages. He puts team ethic before individual expression which is the way I believe great teams are created."
Shevchenko again rejected suggestions his move was prompted by money, reiterating that family considerations were utmost in his thoughts. "Had money been my motivation for coming, I would probably have stayed in Milan. I am pleased that Chelsea managed to conclude everything before the World Cup - I can go to Germany with a clear mind and proud to be a Chelsea player."
The former Dynamo Kiev hero is also Milan’s all-time second top scorer with 173 goals and was the Champions League’s leading marksman this season with nine goals.
He explained last week that he was handing in an official transfer request because he wanted to learn English, as his wife, model Kristen Pazik, is American.
“Today is a day when the dream became reality," added Mourinho. "Andriy has always been my first choice for Chelsea since I arrived. He has great qualities, ambition, discipline, tactical awareness and of course he is a great goalscorer."
