| Francesco Totti is set to pen a new deal holding him to Roma for another five years, but reports suggest there’s a clause freeing him next season if results are disappointing.
The Giallorossi captain has been linked to Real Madrid and Chelsea over the last few years and his future was in considerable doubt following their dismal campaign.
It is widely believed that he’ll sign a new contract which expires in June 2011 and pen could be put to paper over the weekend. However, it has now emerged that it’s not quite the final word on the matter after all.
Rome-based newspaper ‘Il Messaggero’ claims that there is a clause in the contract allowing Totti to re-evaluate his deal on a yearly basis and giving him the opportunity to walk away if the team’s results are not to his liking.
The deal also ensures that Totti’s personal trainer Vito Scala will remain for the duration of the contract, in which the Italian international is guaranteed £4m per season.
Nonetheless, it remains an important step for both the player and the club. Totti is given the freedom to consider other offers, while at the same time Roma don’t run the risk of losing him on a free transfer when his current deal expires in June 2006.
The paperwork also reassures the fans that the team will be strengthened for next season. Totti’s presence can be used to tempt in a prestigious new Coach and there are several big names on the horizon.
Newspapers in Italy are continuing to link Roma with Carlo Ancelotti, whose position at Milan has been severely weakened by the Champions’ League Final defeat to Liverpool. It would be a return to the Capital for the tactician, who spent some of his best years here as a player.
Other candidates to take over from Bruno Conti next year include Udinese boss Luciano Spalletti and Cesare Prandelli – who quit in pre-season to nurse his wife through a serious illness.
