After visiting Francesco Totti, Italy Coach Marcello Lippi has issued words of praise for the Roma captain. “He is the model of a mature man,” he said.
Totti will be out for an estimated two-and-a-half months after fracturing his ankle and displacing ligaments during his side’s record-equalling tenth consecutive League win of the season last weekend.
However, the way the midfielder has responded in adversity has impressed the Azzurri boss, who claims it to be proof of a new, more mature Totti.
“I have come to find him and now I’m gong to visit him,” he said, when noticed by journalists in Rome.
“I would like to say most sincerely, though, that the image Totti is giving out is a great one.
“His reaction to the injury, to going to hospital and to the immediate aftermath of his operation has been great,” he added.
“He is the model of a mature man, someone who has accepted this negative moment in his career with good grace.
“He is transmitting calmness to everyone and has refused to lay the blame on anyone.”
The man responsible for the tackle from behind that put Totti in hospital, Empoli’s Richard Vanigli, was distraught after the incident but revealed that the Italy playmaker had spoken to him to tell him not to blame himself.
Totti, who has often courted controversy with his outspoken views and contentious actions, insists that fatherhood has changed him for the better and it seems that we are seeing a more mature Totti as a result.
Fabio Capello, Juventus’ former Roma boss who was publicly criticised by Totti last October, also had words of goodwill for his former charge yesterday.
“I would like to wish Totti all the best because his loss is not just Roma’s or Italy’s but that to the world football,” he said. “I hope he gets better soon.”
