Dacourt set for Vieira role Thursday 21 July, 2005

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Arsenal are lining up Roma midfielder Olivier Dacourt as a replacement for Patrick Vieira who joined Juventus last week.

Media reports in France on Thursday suggest the Gunners are in advanced talks with Dacourt’s representatives, whose contract with Italian side Roma runs for another 12 months.

It’s not the first time that Coach Arsene Wenger has tried to bring the combative midfielder to Highbury.

After the 1998-99 season with Everton, Dacourt chose to return to France with Lens ahead of Arsenal before joining Leeds the following year.

After playing in the Champions’ League semi-finals with Leeds, Arsenal came knocking again, however this time it was the North London club that pulled the plug on negotiations, preferring the cheaper option of Brazilian Gilberto Silva.

Now, however, given Roma’s fragile financial state, Dacourt could be allowed to go for free, just to trim down the club’s wage bill.

Roma midfielder Olivier Dacourt is keen on a move to Arsenal, according to the player's agent.

Dacourt has been linked with a possible move to Highbury as Arsene Wenger draws up a list of replacements for Patrick Vieira.

Wenger is believed to see Dacourt as an ideal replacement for Vieira as he is a big fan of the French international.

Arsenal are believed to have sounded out Roma over a move for Dacourt and the player's representative Bruno Satin admitted the former Everton and Leeds man would be interested in a return to England with Arsenal.

"Olivier would fit the right profile of what Mr Wenger is looking for," said Satin.

"He has Premiership experience, he would not cost a lot of money, and he would be available immediately."

Dacourt has also attracted the interest of Bolton and Fulham, but Satin insists the 30-year-old is not rushing into a decision over his future.

"We heard that there was some interest from Bolton so we spoke to their manager Sam Allardyce," added Satin. "But at the moment Olivier is not rushing anything.

"He has one year left on his Roma contract and nothing is concrete at the moment.

"Roma are in the Uefa Cup next season and, although it's not the Champions League, it is still European football."

Any possible move by Arsenal for Dacourt could be blocked because Roma currently have a transfer embargo placed on them with no players allowed in or out of the Stadio Olimpico.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Arsenal face competition from Lyon for the signature of Olivier Dacourt after the French champions contacted the Roma player.

The Gunners are believed to be lining up Dacourt as a replacement for the departed Patrick Vieira, but the France international could now be tempted by a move to the Stade Gerland.

Much will depend on the future of Michael Essien, who looks likely to join Chelsea if the English champions stump up the £31m that Lyon President Jean-Michel Aulas is asking.

Aulas, who should meet Chelsea’s owner Roman Abramovich when he returns to Lyon from Asia later this week, was expected to swoop for Nantes’ Jérémy Toulalan as Essien's replacement.

But Dacourt’s extra experience appears to have swayed the Lyon chief towards the 30-year-old.

The former Lens ace, under contract at Roma until 2006, is desperate to win his place back in the France side, and with the World Cup less than 12 months away, could prefer a move to Ligue 1.

He has already succeeded in the Premiership during spells at Everton and Leeds.

The player's agent Bruno Satin hinted on Friday that Arsenal were the favourites. "Olivier would fit the right profile of what (Arsenal Coach) Arsène Wenger is looking for," he said.

"He has Premiership experience, he would not cost a lot of money, and he would be available immediately."
