Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro was officially unveiled as a Real Madrid player on Tuesday.
The 33-year-old centre-back, who only 16 days ago lifted the World Cup with Italy after a dramatic penalty shoot-out victory over France, penned a two-year deal and will wear the number 5 shirt vacated by his opposite number in the World Cup final, the now retired Zinedine Zidane.
"To be here at one of the best clubs in the world is a great honour," Cannavaro told Italian press agency ANSA. "I want to thank president (Ramon) Calderon and the fans because they gave me such a warm welcome when I arrived here.
"To be here at the age of 33 is a real challenge, but I still have a great desire to win. I can't wait to start."
Cannavaro was presented to the press by Calderon and honourary president Alfredo di Stefano.
Cannavaro was one of the first players to leave Juventus during the exodus sparked by the shamed Turin giants' demotion to Serie B for sporting fraud related to a match-fixing scandal.
The defender rejoins former Juve manager Fabio Capello who joined Real after leaving Juventus in the wake of the scandal.
Brazil midfielder Emerson also joined Madrid from Juventus, and according to newspaper Marca is due to sign a two-year deal in the coming days, while centre-back Lilian Thuram and full-back Gianluca Zambrotta went to Real's bitter rivals Barcelona.
France forward David Trezeguet opted to stay in Italy and signed for capital team Roma.
