DAVID MOYES is facing further potential frustration in his attempts to strengthen his Everton squad.

The Goodison manager has been considering a 12-month loan move for Roma defender Matteo Ferrari and a £4million swoop for teammate Simone Perrotta.

But that now appears in jeopardy with the news Roma have failed to have their transfer ban overturned.

The Sport Arbitration Court in Lausanne dismissed the Italian side's appeal against FIFA's decision to ban them from purchasing players in the next summer and winter transfer windows, following complaints made regarding their conduct in signing Frenchman Philippe Mexes.

Roma are expected to launch another appeal in the Swiss civil court this week.

But with the Serie A outfit currently unable to sign play-ers, they would be unlikely to allow anyone to depart an already under-strength squad.

And that would force Moyes to again look elsewhere as he faces an increasing race against time to find reinforcements.

Everton returned from their pre-season tour to Bangkok yesterday, after having finished fourth in the FA Premier League Asia Trophy following their penalty shoot-out defeat against Manchester City on Saturday after a 1-1 draw.

Everton will travel to Istanbul for a friendly against Fenerbahce on Saturday but Moyes has dismissed fears his players may become fatigued by the travelling.

"I am not really concerned about any tiredness," he said..

"There is a good time after we come back from Thailand before we play in the Champions League." Meanwhile, goalkeeper Nigel Martyn has said the element of surprise could work in Everton's favour in their forthcoming Champions League campaign.

Martyn was part of the Leeds United side that reached the semi-finals in 2001, after also having to start in the final qualifying round.

"I have played in the Champions League before and we had to go through the qualifying phase as well," said Martyn.

The lifting of the transfer embargo for Roma is likely to result in Everton, returning to the Italian capital, to tie up their bid for Roma defender Matteo Ferrari.

Ferrari was close to joining Everton a month or so ago, but all moves were put on hold while Roma appealed their transfer ban, with that appeal now successful, they will look to unload several players with Ferrari being one of the first out of the door.

It is expected to be a loan deal at first, with a view to a permanent transfer at the end of the season.

Matteo Ferrari’s short-lived experience with Roma has come to a bitter end after his agent announced an imminent switch to Everton. “Matteo did not train with the squad on Tuesday and the time has come to sign with Everton,” Giovanni Corci told Radio Incontro this evening. “It will be a loan move with the option to buy at the end of the season for an agreed sum of around £3.7m.” The Italian international has never really settled in at the Stadio Olimpico and was often singled out by fans following his mistakes over the last season. 25-year-old defender Ferrari joined Roma from Parma in the summer of 2004, but for some time his future at the club has been in serious doubt and the arrival of Sami Kuffour has pushed him further on to the sidelines. “The negotiations with Everton were run by a bunch of amateurs,” snapped Ferrari’s agent in a final sideswipe at the Giallorossi directors. The former Inter man has not been able to replicate the form that made him a key figure of the Under-21 international scene, nonetheless managing 10 caps with the senior Azzurri squad.
