Nafta Moskva's Italian lawyer has confirmed the takeover bid is over after the police investigation into Roma's finances.
“It is now official,” explained Salvatore Trifiro’ on ‘Radio Capital’. “At 3am on Sunday Feb 29 the negotiations to buy Roma Calcio collapsed.”
Many newspapers maintained that today’s Board of Directors meeting would see the takeover bid officially confirmed by President Franco Sensi (pictured).
However, late Saturday night the negotiator in charge of the talks flew back to Moscow.
“We were effectively in the final stages of the talks,” explained the lawyer, “but the news of the police investigation frightened them off, as the Russians were ready to invest a lot of money into this deal.”
“Initially the sum was going to be in the region of £275m, but within a year it would have been as much as £480m. They were worried and wanted guarantees that this investigation would be over with quickly, but obviously we couldn’t do that.”
This week a police investigation into the finances of Italian football clubs saw documents taken from all the Serie A and B headquarters for inspection.
“The Russians would have come to Italy for promotional purposes,” revealed Trifiro’, “but with this whole affair they could have been sucked into some negative publicity, so they decided to give up on the bid.”
The radio station also asked whether or not there could be a revival of negotiations later on in the season.
“I don’t think so,” he sighed. “The Parmalat and Cirio affairs already gave the Russians a worrying impression of Italian football, so with such a massive deal involved they opted to pull out.”
“I haven’t spoken directly to President Franco Sensi, but we sent a letter saying that we appreciate Roma’s work and wish the club all the best.”
