Antonio Cassano suffered a suspected thigh strain during his Sampdoria debut and could be out for several weeks.
The former Real Madrid man has barely played over the last couple of years and so was out of shape when he arrived in Genoa.
After weeks of intensive training he was finally given the all-clear to play in a friendly against Swiss side Bellinzona.
However, his performance lasted just 44 minutes before Cassano pulled up with a suspected right thigh strain.
Further tests are required to ascertain the extent of the injury, but if that diagnosis is confirmed he could be out for anything up to a month.
It is a particularly bitter blow for Sampdoria, as this friendly was organised specifically to help Cassano and teammate Vincenzo Montella achieve match fitness during the break for international duty.
