Voller: Arrivederci Roma!

Rudi Voller has explained his decision to quit the Giallorossi just 26 days into his tenure in an emotional press conference.
“I want to thank President Franco Sensi for accepting my decision to resign,” stated the tactician.
“I am accustomed to dealing with a team in a certain manner,” he explained. “I tried to continue doing it my way, but last night I understood that it wasn’t the right way for Roma. If I can’t control something, then there is nothing I can do to change it.”
The German handed in his resignation after last night’s humiliating 3-1 defeat to nine-man Roma and the club failed to change his mind in a meeting with Director of Sport Franco Baldini and President Franco Sensi.
“The club was behind me 100 per cent and the squad, led by Francesco Totti, asked me to stay on. I feel it is the right thing to do, as I don’t think I can help this team. The best way to help them is to put more responsibility upon their shoulders for what is happening here, although in the last few games perhaps I made mistakes too.”
There were already reports that Voller was thinking of leaving after he slammed the “complete lack of discipline” at the club, but at the Stadio Dall’Ara it became clear the players were ignoring many of his tactical orders.
Voller was particularly angry with the attitude of the squad in their defeat at the Stadio Dall’Ara.
“It looked like we were playing a friendly,” slammed the now ex-Coach. “There was no heart and no desire. Everyone on the pitch was guilty of that and I, as the ultimate man responsible for the team, preferred to leave.”
However, the former Giallorossi player of the late 1980’s insists that he will return one day.
“My rapport with this city will not change,” said a clearly moved Voller. “I felt ashamed last night after looking at all those fans who had travelled to Bologna. My heart, despite everything, will always be in Rome.”
The club has temporarily handed the reigns to assistant manager Ezio Sella, who looks set to sit on the bench for Tuesday’s Champions’ League trip to Real Madrid, while a press silence has been imposed on the squad.
The Giallorossi must now search for their fourth Coach in three months, as Fabio Capello joined Juventus in early July, while Cesare Prandelli resigned in order to nurse his wife through a serious illness.
Early contenders for the position include former Chievo and Porto boss Gigi Del Neri, fired Genoa Coach Gigi De Canio, Alberto Zaccheroni and even Arrigo Sacchi. The ex-Italy and Milan tactician would be an odd choice, as he left his last Coaching job at Parma due to stress.
