| Cristiano Lucarelli has officially taken 10 days to decide if he’ll accept a move to Russian outfit Zenit FC.
There had been rumours in the newspapers that the Livorno striker was flying out to St Petersburg to complete negotiations this week, but the official confirmation came with a note on the club’s website this afternoon.
“With regards to the recent transfer speculation regarding Lucarelli, we inform you that following yesterday’s talks between Livorno and Zenit St Petersburg, the two clubs have agreed to take 10 days to evaluate the future development of negotiations for his move to the Russian side.”
The newspapers suggested that Zenit had made a lucrative offer Lucarelli could not refuse - £7m to Livorno plus a three-year contract worth a total of £6.2m.
As expected, he won’t attend the pre-season training camp, which is set for July 10, so that he can fly out to Russia to complete negotiations. Zenit reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup in 2005-06, knocked out by eventual winners Sevilla.
The hitman, who was an outside shot at the World Cup squad after scoring 72 League goals in three seasons for the club, had been considering his future following a row with President Aldo Spinelli.
He almost left to join Tottenham in January and is not new to overseas adventures, having played for Valencia in 1998-99.
Lucarelli will turn 31 in October and has also worn the jerseys of Perugia, Cosenza, Padova, Atalanta, Lecce and Torino. Livorno is his hometown club and he rejected multi-million pound moves to take them back into the top flight from Serie B.
Meanwhile, Livorno have signed Bologna goalkeeper Emanuele Manitta as an understudy – or possibly replacement – to Marco Amelia.
