Lo ha dichiarato Pietro Franza, presidente del Messina, all'uscita dall'assemblea generale ordinaria della Lega Calcio. ''Forse -continua Franza- ci saranno altre votazioni, ma siccome in molti sono andati via credo che oggi non si arrivera' a nulla''.
Moratti rejects Lega role
Inter owner Massimo Moratti has withdrawn from the race to become the Italian Football League’s interim President.
The oil tycoon’s name had been mentioned by Palermo chief Maurizio Zamparini yesterday as a possible successor to outgoing President Adriano Galliani.
The latter quit after he was involved in the Calciopoli probe and has been temporarily replaced by Massimo Cellino of Cagliari.
But Moratti withdraw his availability as a candidate after receiving only 22 votes from the first call in a meeting of the Serie A and Serie B club representatives earlier today.
“I officially withdrew my candidacy,” said Moratti as he left the Lega’s Via Rosellini headquarters in Milan.
“My colleagues are free to chose whom they believe and I hope the new President is elected unanimously, but I am no longer available.
“I am honoured I was offered the position, but I had many doubts from the beginning,” he continued.
“We were called to chose a person who could hold the reigns in this difficult moment and I find it distressing that we were not able to do so.”
Zamparini is understood to have pleaded with Moratti to take the role, in the belief that the majority of the clubs would agree on his choice.
However, that was not the case and after criticism of the candidacy by Fiorentina’s Honorary President Diego Della Valle, other clubs also seem to have their concerns.
Messina President Pietro Franza, interviewed while leaving the meeting, said that votes were split between Moratti and Roma’s chief executive Rosella Sensi.
The meeting has now been adjourned until August 8 in which another ballot is expected to be taken as the Presidential search continues.
