We’re closing in on the first Rome Derby of the season with Lazio v Roma set for a 15:00 kick-off next Sunday. To help us get into the mood, over the coming days we’ll be taking a look at some of the classic encounters from down the years. We start today with the Lazio v Roma fixtures played in the 1920s, 30s and 40s.
The first ever Derby della Capitale saw Roma play away to Lazio at the Stadio della Rondinella, which if it were still standing today would lie between the Palazzetto dello Sport in Viale Tiziano and the Stadio Flaminio. It was 8 December 1929 and the first derby went to Roma, coached by Englishman Herbert Burgess. Rodolfo Volk, known as Sciabbolone (Big Sabre), put the Biancocelesti to the sword with a second-half strike. An away game, but only on paper. The following day’s edition of Il Littoriale reports that most of the 15,000 fans at the stadium were Roma supporters: "We knew that the majority of fans in Rome preferred the Giallorossi, but we thought the Azzurri also had a large following. We were proved wrong: nine-tenths of the huge crowd that filled the Stadio della Rondinella were waving yellow and red flags as they cheered on their heroes. We can say that objectively speaking Lazio were playing… at an away ground."
That was the start of a long story. In the 1920s, 30s and 40s there were 18 Lazio v Roma fixtures in Serie A: six wins for the Giallorossi, seven draws and five defeats.
