Francesco Totti and Antonio Cassano could be called up to the Italian squad for the Olympic Games.
"I would be delighted if they were included," stated Gianni Petrucci, the President of the Italian Olympic Committee.
Reports this morning linked the two Romans with this summer’s event after the national side’s failure at Euro 2004.
Cassano is still eligible to play for the Under-21 side, while Totti may be named as one of the three over aged players who could be used by boss Claudio Gentile.
"The Olympics is the most important event for all sports, football included," continued Petrucci.
"Although the Coach has the right to make his own decisions, I do believe that the best players need to go to Athens.
"If Brazil had qualified for the Games then they would have taken Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos. Therefore I think that we too should look to select our finest.
"Let us not forget that the Olympic Games represent a chance for us to hit back after the European Championships."
Other possible players who could be included in the squad are veteran goalkeeper Gianluca Pagliuca, Pippo Inzaghi and Massimo Ambrosini.
