Rudi Voller has warned his players that he will not tolerate a lack of discipline, but the Stadio Olimpico looks set for a six-match Champions’ League ban.

“Clearly this shouldn’t happen,” said Voller after referee Anders Frisk was struck by a metal object thrown from the stands.
“What can I say? We must get back to work and try to prepare for Sunday’s game, but it isn’t easy after this night. You can lose against a better opponent, that can happen, but to end a match like this is so very sad. Everyone is very down right now.”
The tie was halted while Frisk underwent treatment for a head wound, but after half an hour of silence UEFA confirmed it had been abandoned.
“The end of this game was just as tragic as our first half performance,” said Voller with evident black humour. “We didn’t play the way I think a team should and Dynamo Kiev had an extra gear.”
If the fans were disgraceful, then the players have hardly covered themselves in glory. In the last four days Antonio Cassano and Philippe Mexes have been sent off for reaction fouls.
“I didn’t see what happened with Mexes, but I will speak to him tomorrow. A squad needs a certain discipline and in my few weeks here I have realised that at Roma they just don’t have that necessary attitude.”
“It wasn’t a very serious kick,” added the German, “but it is the gesture that must be punished. We will discuss the matter, as these things should not happen and some attitudes at Roma must change. We cannot carry on like this.”
Wednesday had started badly for the Giallorossi with Cassano’s exclusion from the squad for the Dynamo Kiev game.
“As I said in yesterday’s press conference, we would evaluate Cassano’s condition and I didn’t like the look of him in training, so I decided he should stay at home and reflect on how he can help Roma.”
“I don’t want to over dramatise the incident,” added the former Roma star, “as in a few days he can return hopefully fired up for a winning performance. I have been a player who every now and then needed a Coach to turn a blind eye. Cassano is a great kid, but he has to know his limits and I am prepared for an honest conversation with him.”
As for the game itself, Dynamo Kiev were deservedly 1-0 up at half-time and were almost embarrassing the home side.
“Francesco Totti was put under man marking and is not 100 per cent fit yet, so he would have come off had the game continued. Even with great talent, a team needs good fitness levels for this kind of competition.”
UEFA are now set to inflict a ban of at least four to six games, especially as Roma are all too familiar to their disciplinary commission. In March 2002 the Stadio Olimpico was banned for a game and several players suspended after a game with Galatasaray ended in a riot on their way back to the dressing rooms.

Europe’s football governing body also confirmed that tonight’s match was abandoned because the fourth official could not have his safety guaranteed in this situation.
It is particularly shocking for Roma, who only a few months ago saw the local Serie A derby abandoned because their fans spread false rumours that a child had been run over by a police van outside the Stadio Olimpico.
Worryingly, the lighter or coin was thrown from the Tribuna Montemario – the most expensive seats in the stadium. Tickets for this area don’t sell for less than 100 Euros (£70).
President Franco Sensi was clearly upset as he left the arena and would only say that this was “a traumatic night.”
