Authorities warn Roman fans
The Rome derby is a high-risk encounter and both sets of fans have been warned that any violence will see the game stopped and an automatic defeat.
“I am appealing to the most violent factions of the two sets of fans,” said the security chief for the Rome Council Achille Serra. “Clashes with police or offensive banners will force the immediate suspension of the game or abandonment of kick-off altogether.”
The Derby della Capitale has always been a tense fixture, but in recent years it has escalated and last season the game was abandoned at half-time after Roma fans spread false rumours that a child had been run over and killed by a police van outside the stadium.
This year there was further tension following Lazio’s 3-1 victory on January 6, as Paolo Di Canio was pictured performing what appeared to be a Fascist salute under the Curva Nord. The Biancocelesti have had problems with a far-right section of their support and this incident caused controversy.
“I would also like to appeal to the players so that they’d avoid the provocation and inopportune behaviour seen earlier this season,” continued police chief Serra.
“If their actions move into the realm of a crime, then I would not hesitate to suspend the match. I hope that they do not try to provoke violence in the stands and instead maintain their decorum.”
When the derby was abandoned last year, the game was simply replayed, but under new rules both clubs could face sanctions in the face of further violence.
“To suspend the game because of crowd trouble would be damaging for both teams, as if their fans are responsible then the club will automatically lose the tie 3-0. In Roma and Lazio’s current situation, it would make their fight against the drop even more difficult.（CHANNEL4）
